How to connect Moblin, IRL Pro or BELABOX to a cloud OBS

Every IRL app asks for the same two things, an address and a stream ID. They just put the boxes in different places.

What you are connecting

Your phone or bonding box is the camera and the encoder. It sends one video feed to an ingest address, and the OBS running on your cloud machine picks that feed up, puts your scenes and overlays around it, and sends the result to Twitch, Kick or YouTube.

The phone only ever talks to the ingest. That is why a dropped signal does not end the stream: OBS keeps broadcasting, shows your BRB screen, and switches back when the feed returns.

SRT, SRTLA or RTMP

The LIVE Toolkit takes all three, and the Feed tab shows the address to use for each.

ProtocolWhen to use it
SRTThe default for a phone. It resends what a weak connection loses, so a bad patch shows as a short dip rather than a frozen stream.
SRTLASRT over two or more connections at once, such as two SIMs, or a SIM and Wi-Fi. Use it when your app or box can bond.
RTMPWorks everywhere and recovers from nothing. Fine on a solid connection, and the first to stutter on a weak one.

Before you start

  • Start your server from the LIVE Toolkit. The ingest address appears in the Feed tab once it is running.
  • Keep the Feed tab open while you set up the app, on a computer or on the phone itself.
  • Treat the stream ID like a password. Anyone who has it can send video to your server.

Moblin

On an iPhone the quickest way is the Open in Moblin button in the Feed tab. Tap it on the phone and Moblin opens with the camera already set up. On a computer, show the QR code instead and scan it with the iPhone's camera.

To set it up by hand, go to Settings, then Streams, then your stream, then SRT(LA). Paste the URL into the URL field and leave Stream id alone: Moblin fills it in from the URL.

IRL Pro

Tap the cog at the top left, then Connections, then New connection. Paste the URL first, because the stream ID field only appears once there is a URL in it, then paste the stream ID.

BELABOX

BELABOX wants the host and the port in separate fields rather than one URL. Copy them from the Feed tab, use the SRTLA port if you are bonding, and paste the same stream ID.

Larix

Larix has one combined field: the stream ID travels inside the URL rather than in a box of its own. Copy the URL with the stream ID included from the Feed tab.

Check the feed is arriving

Go live from the app, then look at the toolkit. Until a feed arrives the monitor says it is waiting for one; once it lands, the camera's tile shows the bitrate coming in.

If nothing arrives, the stream ID is the usual culprit: a space picked up when it was pasted, or the field left empty in an app that needs it typed in.

Turn on the toolkit's alerts and your phone gets a notification when the feed drops or turns unstable, so you know before chat does.

Common questions

SRT or SRTLA?

SRTLA if your app or box can bond two connections, because then one bad network no longer takes the stream down. Plain SRT otherwise: it still copes with a weak signal far better than RTMP.

Can I use more than one phone?

On Pro, yes: up to three, each with its own ingest in the Feed tab. If the phone on air drops, one that is still steady goes on air instead of the BRB screen.

Why is my BRB screen showing?

Because the feed stopped arriving, or turned too unstable to show. The toolkit switches back by itself once it has been steady again.

Is my stream ID secret?

Yes. It works like a stream key: anyone who has it can send video to your server. The Moblin QR code holds it too, so hide it before you share your screen.
